James Engel

James Engel established the New York office of Kensington Capital Advisors in 2008. Prior to joining Kensington, James held derivative sales and trading positions at two top tier investment banks. Mr. Engel brings a great deal of reinvestment and derivative experience to the Firm. Mr. Engel has been working in the field of Public Finance since 1998. Just prior to joining Kensington, James was a member of the UBS Municipal Derivative Solutions Group. At UBS, James was responsible for all reinvestment-related derivatives including escrows, reserve funds, project funds, etc. In addition to his reinvestment duties, he also focused on the structuring of derivative solutions for UBS’ municipal and 501(c)3 clients. James also led efforts providing municipal derivative products to hedge funds and institutional clients. Before his move to UBS, James was a derivative product specialist on Bank of America’s Global Derivative Trading Desk with a focus on tax-exempt and taxable debt issued by 501(c)3 and municipal clients. During his tenure at Bank of America, Mr. Engel moved to the trading desk where he hedged the banks municipal derivatives including GIC’s, repurchase agreements, swaps, caps, FDA’s and escrows.Mr. Engel holds a B.S. from the State University of New York at Albany, where he majored in Economics and Business Administration. Prior to entering college, he enlisted in the United States Navy. While serving in the Navy, Mr. Engel worked in the Aviation Department on board the USS Forrestal and the USS Wasp. During his time in the military, Mr. Engel received a meritorious advancement as well as several Letters of Commendation, earned while deployed at sea. Mr. Engel is currently a volunteer firefighter for the Spencertown Volunteer Fire Company and also serves as the Chairman of the Board for the Austerlitz Fire District.
